There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino gaming is banned. Eight casinos are situated in a generally tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, funding sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are allegedly necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of most border crossings.

The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling den, contains one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machine games and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel compound that contains many conveniences accompanying the gambling hall, which offers ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
