Cambodia Gambling Halls
Tuesday, 5. January 2016
There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is banned. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling hall, features 150 slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that features many comforts aside from the casino, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight tables.
